Xylem and Phloem - Transport in Plants | Biology | FuseSchool

Plants have a transport system to move things around.

The xylem moves water and solutes, from the roots to the leaves in a process known as transpiration.

The phloem moves glucose and amino acids from the leaves all around the plant, in a process known as translocation.

The xylem and phloem are arranged in groups called vascular bundles. The arrangement is slightly different in the roots to the stems. The xylem are made up of dead cells, whereas the phloem is made up of living cells.

xylem - this moves water and nutrients from the roots in the soil back to the leaves.

phloem - this moves glucose and amino acids made in the leaves to the rest of the plant.

These "tubes" are coupled and travel together in bundles called "vascular bundles."

The arrangement of vascular bundles is different in the roots and the stem.
The job of the roots is to be tough and hard and therefore the vascular bundle is in the center and surrounded by tough tissue.
The job of the stem is to resist bending and therefore the vascular bundles are on the periphery/edge

Xylem flow is one directional - from the roots to the leaves. Phloem flow is bidirectional allowing for amino acids and sucrose to be sent where they are needed.

When you have a biology test in 5 hours :/

Perfectly illustrated, the way you explained everything in such a small synopsis it sounded so simple, and so easy. The teacher in our online classes would never be able to explain it to us in such an easy manner. I appreciate this video being recommended to me, thank you very much sir.

Thank you very much😘
You know I have exams in this month and I can't even understand by reading my text book
When I searched about transportation in plants
Most of the videos are boring
But at last my mind said let's watch this 😁
And I understand it
More than I thought 🤗😊
Once again thank you ☺

Ok wow I couldn’t understand for two weeks and this helped me in two minutes

There is a mistake at 2:11... It should be sucrose and amino acids being transported down the phloem (as stated earlier in the video at 1:56), and not glucose and amino acids.

Thanks for explaining this! I believe comparing it to blood flow in a human made me understand what it actually is.
