The Jewish Faith has specific traditions when it comes to the headstone for a deceased. How long do they wait to place a headstone?

Thank you, Kari, for this information. My life partner passed away 7 months after his mother. We decided to unveil their grave markers at the same time. It was the normal one year for her but only a few months for him. The family felt that combining the unveilings at the same time would help everyone with the mourning process. The Rabi agreed and granted his permission. It was a lovely ceremony, and it brought my father-in-law and I closer in our grief.

Thank you, Kari, you are correct.
Sometimes tradition is broken, and the unveiling ceremony, will happen sooner than a years time. Or it may never happen.
It's up to each family. In some cases, the dearly departed has been cremated. That is another story. Jewish tradition doesn't do cremations. But, times have changed. The headstone may be made and placed at the grave and covered up, not long after the burial. The ceremony may take place very soon. Times have changed, in what we do. But, we still bring small rocks to place on the headstone.

When you visit a Jewish cemetery you place a rock on the headstone to let the deceased know you were there. My mom had a tradition or superstition that after you return from a funeral you leave a pitch of water outside the house. You wash your hands and feet so you don't bring death into the home. I've adopted her tradition now

I was curious about this when Ruth Bader Ginsburg's stone was unveiled. Thank you for the explanation.
