One thing that's important to remember here is that Voldemort didn't drink the unicorn blood himself. Quirrel did. And he did so to sustain Voldemort's life force. However! It's also possible that Quirrel did it to keep his *own* life force going, because it's possible that sharing Voldemort's soul/essence was doing bad things to his body.

In book 4, in his rudimentary form before being revived in the cauldron, Voldemort drank a mix of Nagini venom and unicorn blood to keep him going. I don't know how the curse of drinking unicorn blood was supposed to work there, but drinking Nagini venom sounds revolting. And isn't it supposed to be poisonous?
