When I was a kid, I heard that as "Voldemort started to gather flowers, brought them over to the dark side."

Which made me think Voldemort was collecting dark side flowers the night he killed Harry's parents.

Voldemort went after Harry after being told about part of a prophecy that foretold his future defeat. Snape heard part of the prophecy and told Voldemort but Snape didn't know that Voldemort would go after Lily who he still loved. Voldemort only knew about the first part of the prophecy that said that the person who will kill him will be born at the end of July to parents who have escaped him 3 times. Voldemort thought by killing Harry as a baby he was preventing his future defeat. Voldemort didn't know about the other part of the prophecy about marking Harry as his equal. If Voldemort had heard the whole prophecy he would have waited.
