I really like Eric Bana's character here. I mean, he claims he is someone who is better "on his own" but as you can see he's the one who motivates Eversmann when he starts to doubt. In this world full of critics, find someone like Hoot.

Rules of a Combat Medic...

1) Good men will die.
2) Doc can't save everyone.
3) Doc will go through hell to break rules 1 and 2.

My father once told me. "In war, good men will die bravely so brave men will live to see a good life."

“You’ll have plenty of time to think about that, believe me”. Truer words have never been spoken.

Everything Hoot said in this film was spot on. The things he'd probably seen as a Delta operator. He was a real warrior and helped everyone.

Interesting fact: While Smith, Eversman, Grimes and the rest of chalk four are all real people, Hoot is a fictional character. He's present at every key moment: the raid to capture the prisoners, Strueker's humvee column, Jamie's death, the long night at the six-one crash site, and the final sprint to the UN stadium. He even visits the six-four crash site. It's almost like he was created to be the narrator of war: an omnipresent super soldier who lives and breaths combat, there to give a contrast to the emotions and deaths and struggles of the real soldiers who fought this battle.

Women: Men don't cry in Titanic? Do y'all have feelings?

Men: Oh we do feel it. It's just not that movie.

I read the book by Mike Bowden. The two of them took turns sticking their hands deep into the wound in order to grab the ruptured vein. It was bad. Also Jamie's dad was an amputee Nam vet that didn't want his son to join the military. He shared gruesome battle stories with Jamie but it fell on deaf ears. Anyways...great book but very graphic.

It’s 2024. This is one of the closest heart felt scenes in cinematic history. It makes you feel, When men are surrounded by brothers, in a situation where you know it is the most important chapter of your life, it’s a different type of love that you’re looking at those men with. hats off to this scene 🔥

Powerful as this scene is, I think they actually missed an opportunity.

For me, the most compelling part of Jamie Smith's death is the back-and-forth, gut-churning debate over whether to attempt to rescue him or not by landing a helicopter. This was something touched upon in the movie, but not expounded upon in great detail. The extent to which they were willing to go in order to try to rescue Jamie Smith, against all odds, was both heartbreaking and inspiring. It's also a reminder of what an impossible position these men were in. Do they go for the rescue and, likely, lose another helicopter, or do they sacrifice one man to save many more? These are the choices they were faced with and I'm glad I didn't have to make them.

I wish the movie had spent more time on this part of the story, if only to show the audience that they didn't just leave Smith to his fate, and that they really did give everything short of losing another helicopter to save his life.

They call him 'Hoot' because he doesn't really give a hoot how bad things get.
