Retropie is one of the most respected and widely used emulators on the market.. so to say it doesn't work without specific information as to what exactly isn't working I'm limited on the amount of support I can give you..

If you're trying to run graphically intensive games such as N64 or Playstation it's recommended that you use a Raspberry Pi 3, as older generations of the Pi are limited on RAM and hardware resources so they have trouble with the graphics..

If you are using a Pi 3 and still have trouble running your emulator, be sure that your firmware is up to date and that you have an adequate power source coming to your pi.

Also make sure your pi isn't overheating.. you can install a heatsink and/or small fan in your Pi case to ensure it runs cool and doesn't overheat.
