Robert de Visée, D Minor Suite - Prelude

The more ancient the music, the harder it is to find - this is true of all early music research. The vast majority of past music has been lost and we only receive the tip of the iceberg nowadays. With Visée's music, we are lucky to have two compendia, which contain his theorbo suites: the Paris manuscript and the Saizenay manuscript. We are lucky not because they are twice-attested, but because the music appears differently between them.

This kind of luck leaves the musician with a choice: which one of these do I choose? Or better yet, might these provide a window into the kind of variety I can imbue into my own performance practices?
