A.I. expert, Matthew Stamm, can identify deepfakes by 'dusting for digital fingerprints'. But it's a game of cat and mouse -- as soon as the 'good guys' figure out a way to identify a deepfake, the people making the fake content adapt.

In a world where an altered photo, video or voice recording can cause damage to an individual or spark a political firestorm, how can technology keep up? And how can we be sure that we’re able to tell what’s real from what isn’t?

In our series Super Users, VICE World News explores the latest technology being used to fight crime, trafficking, climate change and social injustice.

Spent the entire video expecting it to end on 'this video was presented by a deep fake'. I thought the constant (distracting) looks to the side was an obvious malfunction. That Buscemi/Lawrence bird thing was nightmarish!

This should be available to the public, to get them used to screening videos to verify authenticity. If this becomes a common practice that can be updated on a regular basis, it can be viewed as similar to an antivirus program. Too many people have no clue about this, so making it commonplace as a standard would be genius.

The narrator of this video might be deep faking himself, who knows

i think we are moving way too fast. we should NOT develop something without knowing how to combat it.

the fact that I learned about this in school 3 years ago, and that it's only getting out now.. I could only imagine how much things have advanced since it was initially developed.. The world is about to really crazy in 5 - 10 years... let alone 20

I think the little dog was much cuter with the cast than the manipulated image.

Vice is putting out so much great content on a regular basis that I'm not getting any of my errands done.

Sometimes I fantasize about bringing a video like this back in time 10 or 20 years and imagine what someone would think after watching it.

If you deepfake the background but make it look the same it should help the metadata signature difference problem

That's it. I knew Mark Zuckerberg doesn't really look like he does in his commercials and promotions. 🤣

And when AI gets smart enough to start doing it on their own and there’s no telling who is real or fake or even dead or alive.
