Originally built in the 1200s, and then enlarged in the following century, the Basilica of San Domenico is a majestic albeit somewhat austere example of medieval Sienese architecture. But the true meaning of this church is the extraordinary relic that it contains - the disembodied head of one of Catholicism's most important saints, St. Catherine of Siena!

Went to Florence for 8 days. Saw most of Florence and had an extra day. Took bus to Sienna for the day. Walked all around this beautiful and interesting city. Saw both these sites. Very interesting but I was slightly taken aback by her head on display on the alter. The days of religious relics.
