This is the first time I’ve heard him not talk about the US forest service

First comment. I believe the quote at the end is from the wonderful Red Greene

Just wanted to thank you. Dad wasn’t around as a kid and I had to teach myself a lot I actually figured out the air leak test on accident but hey it worked. But thank you from me and those fatherless kids that have learned so much from you.

My dad was an old school mechanic, he used to have this tire vulcanizing tool made from a piece of wood, some steel, long bolts and an old piston head from a 4-banger. He would fire up the piston ND sandwhich the interior tire between the steel plate and piston head and make patches out of old interior rubber.

Worked like a charm in patching things up.

I remember helping my grandfather use his hot patch kit, you took a piece of rubber a little square tin with a thermite type mixture. he clamped it down on the patch with a special clamping tool, then he lit the cup. it got hot enough to fuse the patch to the innertube. I can still remember the smell lol.

I’ve always used two pieces of thin wood and a c clamp over the patch and let it set up for about 15 minutes. Worked out great.

I believe that’s a Red Green quotation you have there! :D.

I had no idea that you’re Steve Smith’s grandson. Lol.

My father wasn't really around to teach me these things, so I'm glad I have you to look up to. Now I can try your methods out and if I like them share them with my son. Thank you.

The sticker patches I find can fail in high heat. In my case, bicycle tubes, which can spend time in a car or in the sun. The patch kits with glue seem to be better in the long haul (and heat). As always ymmv.
