The mission seemed simple, throw an egg at a bedsheet and get it to break… sounds easy right? Think again! In this episode, Jason Latimer is challenged by NASA to use maximum force to break a fragile egg against a bedsheet. Using the laws of motion, Jason tests his throwing expertise, a slingshot and even a vacuum cannon to see which will break the egg. Watch to the end to find out if Jason’s mission was successful. The trajectory of the egg coming out of the vacuum cannon indicates a very low velocity. The hand thrown egg looked much faster. I'd like to see this done with a sling.

There's actually a few ways you can do this. First way is to pre-crack the shell but only in the air pocket at the top to displace the strength of the egg, however this could be interpreted as cheated (or thinking outside the box). And the second is to tighten the bedsheet to reduce the stopping time. The tighter the sheet the slower the velocity of the egg has to be. Imagine the bedsheet is as tight as a drum, then you only need to gently lob the egg towards it, not even a throw.

The bedsheet was too loose. It needs to be tighter so there’s less give when the egg hits it. Also the egg has to go a lot faster.

That's a wrist rocket, not a sling shot, a sling shot is what David killed Goliath with, and it is much more powerful.
