I'm not white (ethnic Chinese but Canadian) and I've been playing D&D since the early 1980s. Skin colour was never a thing because everyone who I played D&D was a fellow geek/nerd, we accepted anyone and everyone who wanted to play D&D. I knew that D&D was inspired by Tolkien and European myths, fables, and lore and I was fine with that. I was happy when Oriental Adventures came out because I got to have East Asian cultural influences in D&D, however today I keep hearing how racist it was! So the one time that a Chinese-Canadian kid of the 80s got "representation" it was racist, which means there will never be another Oriental Adventures again — the one time of having a proper East Asian-inspired setting. Who's the racist now? (BTW, "Oriental" (aka "Eastern") is not a racist term, it's just the opposite of "Occidental" (aka "Western") ..."Asian" is someone who's a resident of the continent of Asia, which I'm not).

Maybe what Kyle Brink meant with "it's no longer white dudes in basements" is: "now it's white dudes in living rooms". We got out of the basement finally!

Back in the 90s, we would accept ANYONE that would play. And put up with a staggering amount of bullshit from people, just to keep them at the table.

Could not care one way or the other - I don't give WotC money.

The demographics reflected in NotC’s art are a perfect representation of Starbucks employees in Seattle.

This is just one of the many reasons that I play only old school D&D and AD&D. I don't deal with nonsense. Great video

It's all about virtue signaling. The are such narcissists.

I am a leftist involved in game publishing, I have worked for several of the companies you mention. It's a primarily a white male hobby, not exclusively and I have never seen gatekeeping based on anything racial or gender related. Those who are interested are always welcome. The industry has been taken over by idiots, they may be well meaning, but they are idiots. I have been playing RPGs since the late 70s so I am not a newcomer. This comes down to virtue signaling hypocrites and desperate suits trying to expand the audience in the dumbest ways possible. This genre was made by mostly white men and "you're welcome", that said I do hope other people get involved, organically. As you say, there is a place for everyone. It's a great and fun hobby that has something for everyone who wants to dip a toe into it. To tell you the truth though, since the industry has begun pandering to "Modern Audiences" I took the message clearly and got out. They no longer make products for me so I moved on, That was their choice, they have no right to expect me to stay involved, it just is not for me anymore and name calling is not going to bring me back. It's about respect and they expect it while not showing any. Look how WotC talked about the creators of D&D, Shameful! These people would not have jobs if it were not for those creators. I hope the casuals they may interest are worth it for them. I'll take Conan kicking ass in a dark brutal world over a safe-space dwarven baking contest any day of the week. I also HATE anthropomorphic animal characters, any game system that introduces them loses my interest. If I ever go back to playing, it will be 1st or 2nd edition and Hasbro will not see another dime from me. Also, you cannot beat the smell of those 1st edition books, pure magic.

It is the "furry" invasion in modern D&D that I - oddly enough - find to be the most grotesque development. There wasn't enough gatekeeping.

"The world has gone woke"
I have an election map that begs to differ.

Even in my city, montreal a woke stronghold, i went to a boardgame event, 90 percent white dudes, 5 percent women like (40+ years old) and maybe 6 modern audiences.

Main reason why my group decided to not buy anything from "Woke of the Coast" and just make our own TTRPG.

I quit playing MTG when it became painfully obvious that they were only drawing white men as the object of the end of a black spell or the evil causing the spell and only black women could be white soldiers. It's so obvious that it's just gauche.

I don't care about representation. I just want a good game.

All hasbro wants is to increase their their DEI score. They don’t give a shit about the player base. Just pirate their books.

I mean just look at how video games like Concord and Dragon Age: Veil Guard really managed to draw in the modern audience. Turns out the entire ‘modern audience’ was just a few extremely woke journalists.

These people : " *Representation matters!* " Just not intentionally under-representing the overwhelming majority of your patronage. One thing that always makes these people "not good" (as in moral), is that they assert a moral wrong, and then choose a purposely allowable target-group to commit that wrong against. They do not understand the universality of morality.

It's always a bad idea to treat your base like you hate them.
