But sir, such Roman histories may include fantastical speeches and elaborate triumphs of Roman character but these treatises within the history book is how Livy and Dio show is the nature and culture of Romans.
It was a culture of moral posturing. Augustus was a man who was very keen on moral posturing and so was Marcus Aurelius and many others.

The average Roman writer saw being biased as a true dedication to the Roman state and Roman authority. They will lambast and criticize what they term as “shameful”, “effeminate” or “disgraceful” because Rome was very much a society of displaying one’s virtue and harkening back to “the glory of our forefathers” as they would have put it.
It may be a little vain but at least we are able to get an understanding on how that great culture worked.
