This radically streamlined pen changed the shape of pens almost overnight. Many pens to this day retain the iconic tapered shape introduced by the Shaeffer Balance.

For those who enjoy writing by hand, there is a particular elegance and satisfaction to be found in writing with a good fountain pen. One of the few accessories that a gentleman can collect and use daily, a great fountain pen really does enhance the pleasure of writing. Not only that, but a vintage fountain pen is also a small piece of history in your hand!

Originally developed by the Waterman company in 1884, there have been a number of incredible fountain pens through the years. Kirby talks through 6 examples that he believe are some of the most iconic fountain pens to have been made in the 20th Century.

Sheaffers balance is one of my favourites. I have four of them. Sadly, the factory at Fort Madison, Iowa, closed down. It subsequently changed hands several times. It is now owned by an Indian company called William Penn Private Ltd.

I’ve always loved the Sheaffer Balance dearly. I have several of them. And I’ve always pointed out to people that rave about, say. the Parker Duofold and the Parker 51 for being revolutionary in pen/nib design, that the Sheaffer Balance is every bit as iconic and pioneering in ushering in the first pen design and aesthetic of its kind. Everybody else soon followed suit.
For the record, I adore my Sheaffer PFMs and they are equally unforgettable classics for an ingenious, unique filling system (the snorkel) and the undying beauty of the long diamond gold inlaid nib.

I have my grandfather's Sheaffer fountain pen with calendar desk set from 1959. It's a snorkel fill.
