Fear of the unknown is at the roots of the yearly long protests in hongkong. China could broadcast some more Tv shows/ reality shows in Cantonese for example to show Hongkongers they shouldn't be afraid of their mainland peers. Hongkong will always be a part of China and forever be a unique city and not be 'like any other Chinese city' A phrase very often used by protesters.
