#Queensryche #QueensrycheReaction #TakeHoldOfTheFlame

In this edition of #TheDailyDoug, I'm listening to Take Hold of the Flame by Queensrÿche. My friend, Montag, from the Heavy Metal Horror podcast suggested the live version of this one, and I'm happy to have watched it. Tate's voice take center stage in this tour-de-force of a performance. Enjoy!

Of course Geoff is just untouchable in the 80s and 90s, but Chris Degarmo's backing vocals are freaking outstanding.

Would love to see a reaction to the Operation: Mindcrime concept album as an extended play at one point.

No doubt we teenagers of the 80s had the best best best music and singers!!!

The Warning album was way ahead of its time, Roads to Madness and NM156 are very cutting edge for 1984, the whole album has a very dark, dystopian vibe, it's very underrated, a true classic.

Geoff's range on Queen of the Reich, The Lady Wore Black and Take Hold of the Flame is just crazy... but the overall band is just fantastic... that EP, to Warning, to Rage, to Mindcrime is where my QR love usually goes back to. Empire is at that edge of almost too polished, but it's still a great album. For me, just not the same quality of writing after DeGarmo left the band, but that 80s era was just magical.

Was about time, Geoff in his prime was no joke

Getting the lyrics analyzed instead of just hearing 'What a range' is priceless!

"I think Geoff took hold of his flame." Pure Gold.

I think the time has come to do Operation: Mindcrime in its entirety - the best album ever to be created, by the way :)

Had the pleasure of seeing these guys with Geoff as the lead singer on the Empire tour. Was treated to the whole Mindcrime album and then most of Empire. Underrated band in my opinion, LOVE them.

Fun fact: Geoff Tate, Ann Wilson (Heart) and Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) were all vocally trained by the late Maestro David Kyle of Seattle.

I'll keep this brief, as I am not looking for some conversation about this, or anything else. I doubt this will ever get read, but rather stuck in the weeds of hundreds of comments. If you see it someday, fantastic.

Grew up playing stringed and brass instruments. Pretty much all of them. Started a music degree program, started drugs, dropped out of school, did not drop out of drugs.

Due to the damage my lifestyle (see: I) did to my body, I am now on a terminal clock.

Thankfully, working isn't a need for me, so I watch some YouTube. Found you. Your words - the language of theory, musicology, lyrical analysis - it made my soul sing. I simply cried for a while.

I have a little under a year left, but I have enrolled myself into school, and will be taking courses and studying and analyzing and taking exams about music, for the rest of my life.

That's because of you, mostly, so I wanted to make sure and embed my thanks into your channel, to be there to celebrate you into perpetuity. You helped give my ending a little more purpose, and I thank you.

Queensryche was and is one of my absolute favorite bands. See them live still whenever I can. Geoff Tate is a talent that far exceeds metal. One of the greatest voices in modern music period.

When their debut EP came out and got some local airplay in Seattle, Geoff was nailing that exact same high E on “Queen of the and I can tell you, a lot of us did a dramatic double-take at the radio when we heard that! Those guys in their early years were downright amazing.

@3:33 “I think Geoff just took hold of his flame”. You, sir, have won the internet for today. Your award is in the mail. Seriously though if you enjoyed this, look up Roads to Madness from the same album. The way the music follows the lyrical content of the last 2 stanzas(?) is just amazing composition to me.

I saw queensryche in '84 and '86 and Tate's vocals were other worldly. Insane range and up there with Halford, Dickinson and Dio.

Doug, look no further than the EPIC song from the same studio album. The song is called "Roads To Madness" displaying Geoff's full vocal range and it's also accompanied by a symphony orchestra, composed by none other than Michael Kamen.

So glad you chose the Tokyo version. I haven't watched your reaction yet, but I have always thought the note at 3:56 in the track may be one of the finest live notes ever in metal.

"Wow!" As you said Doug.
That's what my friend's and I were saying in 1984 when this came out.
I still say it today, every time I hear this song.
I was fortunate enough to catch this tour at L'amour in Brooklyn way back when - the band was even wearing the same clothes!
