Another one of the best movies of 2013
Made $93 million domestically $286 million worldwide
The title actually comes from the Greek translation 'after earth'
District 9 is better but I still love Neil Blomkamp'a direction making it feel so much more timely now

I really love the world-building in this tackling the healthcare system; it makes a commentary on the less fortunate unable to afford medicine while the wealthy reap the benefits cutting themselves off entirely
The inhabitants on Earth also serve as a metaphor for illegal immigrants being marginalized trying to get in
Plenty of stuff in here covering economic disparities, social inequality, class division, artificial scarcity, preventative medicine, and environmental degradation
The action is so cool, it's wickedly violent, the CGI on the robots is pretty slick and effective next to ELYSIUM itself, and it has an epic score
The station of ELYSIUM is like something out of a 1970s science fiction story
Blomkamp definitely predicted a scary vision of our future; how many hector about inequality or pontificating sociopolitics?
Plus it’s pretty accurate Earth is still torn apart by greed, indifference, and cruelty (wealth gap)
Not that far fetched now with certain billionaires planing to leave our planet behind reserved for the world elite
It would be a blessing to have all the medical advances heal all diseases re-atomozing damaged tissue
It's a shame Foster isn't in this more next to Damon and her accent slips in and out making her acting a bit iffy
But Damon rules playing a man trapped in a Third World planet looking for a way out
A movie that feels truly plausible with its politics as well as the advanced medicinal technology but also throwing in some cool sci-fi elements adding to the allegory
Not as good as ‘District 9’ but a worthy companion piece

District 9 was awesome man. There was nothing mundane about that story. Not to mention the message and tongue in cheek bashes against apartheid were wonderful.

That's all been done before though. This seems to be somewhat original and inspired. (the director made District 9)

Elysium reminds me of the setting of Vanquish
