This is because an overactive immune system accelerates skin cell growth. Normal skin cells grow completely and slough off (fall off) within a month. In psoriasis, skin cells do this in just three or four days. Instead of sloughing off, skin cells accumulate on the surface of the skin. Some people report that psoriasis plaques itch, burn, and sting. Plaques and scales can appear anywhere on the body, although they are commonly found on the elbows, knees, and scalp. The inflammation caused by psoriasis can affect other organs and tissues in the body. People with psoriasis may also experience other health problems. One in three people with psoriasis may also develop psoriatic arthritis. Signs include swelling, stiffness, and pain in the joints and areas around the joints. It is often undiagnosed, especially in its milder forms. However, it is important to treat it early to help prevent permanent joint damage. Symptoms usually begin between ages 15 and 25, but can begin at any age. Men, women and children of all skin colors can get psoriasis. Types of psoriasis There are five types of psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis Guttate psoriasis pustular psoriasis Inverse Psoriasis Erythrodermic Psoriasis It is possible to have more than one type of psoriasis at the same time and more than one type throughout your life. Treatments may vary depending on the type and location of psoriasis.
