Her mother must have felt so guilty for not picking her up... the fact the girl cried, begging for a lift was heart-breaking....

Always sucks to see that the one who committed the crimes died before investigators could get justice for the families. Breaks my heart.

This story makes me so mad. That arse was able to live his whole life, abuse other girls, and never have to face the consequences of his actions. Mean while, each of the victims had to deal with his actions everyday of their lives, and in Linda’s case…was never able to have a full life. I am so happy her case was never forgotten about. I’m thankful science has provided the tools necessary to catch these kinds of people. As a mom, just thinking about what Linda’s mom had to live with, the guilt, the pain, the sadness, the deep remorse… It breaks my heart.

So sad, a child complained of sexually abused by this man for months but unpunished. A child’s complain should be taken seriously. Bad people 😢

A woman from my kids afterschool church group took off with my daughter in her personal car one time. My daughter answered her phone, told me who she was with and I demanded she be brought home immediately. My daughter hung up and she wasn't returned. I contacted the leader of the group and threatened to call the police on obduction charges so they gave me the woman's cell phone number. I called her and demanded that she meet me at Rutters to give me my child which she did. The church group dropped her from their youth group. DON'T EVER TRUST ANYONE WITH YOUR CHILDREN!!!

I have 2 daughters and I'm simply heartbroken for the mother. All of us - parents - are sometimes 'too busy' to do something for our kids. Watching this video made sure I'll never be too busy to pick up my girls, no matter where they are and what time of day it is. A horrible story. May she rest in peace...

A lot of people wonder how a mother could allow her child to walk 2 km by themselves at the age of 11. What most don't understand is this was 1973. Throughout the 70s and early 80s we as kids went everywhere by ourselves. The neighborhood and walked home from school by ourselves. It was a different world then. No one is to blame for this except the monster that get this.

I don’t care if you were beaten or abused in other ways as a child, you don’t have to kill another.

It is absolutely shameful that this guy kept getting caught and only got a slapped on the wrist. RIP Linda

I walked to and from school most of my life. My mother often refused to come pick me up. In no way is anyone to blame except for the monster who did this to her.

This was my nightmare growing up. I was 11 in 1979 and had a van roll up and stop ahead of me while walking home. It scared me so bad I froze briefly and decided to run towards homes on the other side. I hid behind trash cans and stayed there for as long as I could. I was lucky that day. But I was also hyper vigilant. I remember advice from school about be careful of strangers. And at that time children were being abducted and killed in Atlanta. I just moved from SC and the world frightened me. I'm so sorry for Linda and her family. So many missed opportunities to save her life.

When I was younger, probably 10 or so, I went grocery shopping with my mom. She didn't grab a cart, so she told me to go outside and grab one. I said no because I was afraid something would happen. She made fun of me and called me lazy and irresponsible. I ended up going, walking through a huge parking lot on my own to find a cart. This man in a large white truck pulls up to me and starts asking me for directions. Immediately, I knew something was wrong. Who asks a 10 year old for directions? So I ran inside without the cart, crying. My mom yelled at me and said I was crazy and that no one was going to kidnap me. Considering the abuse I received at my mom's hands, I used to think, "Maybe I should've gotten in that guy's truck."

Needless to say, that event stuck with me (it wasn't even the last time someone attempted), and I don't let my son go anywhere without me. He used to complain until I told him, and he is completely understanding now. A lot of my friends are very cavalier with their kids, and it gives me anxiety. But I have to remember that many kids are aware and manage to stay safe. I'm just still nervous.

I find it so baffling how, in all these stories, no matter how extensive the search was, the body will always be found by people out having a nice time. Police and volunteers could look in the same exact spot and not see anything, but an innocent family out for a picnic, or god forbid a dog walker? They're practically magnets.

That cop’s picture you show a few times, starting at the 3:23 mark, is creepy as hell. Started to make me think he had something to do with Linda’s disappearance and then murder. SMFH!

My kid's always tell me I'm to protective. I don't believe a mother can be to protective with all these predators out there. They get a slap on the wrist and are right back out to do the same thing.

I bet her mother and the other lady at school, who both had a chance to bring Linda home, both suffered guilty feelings after Linda's death. How awful. It wasn't their fault. It was the fault of the POS who killed her and went on his merry way to violate others and live another 45 years without being brought to justice. Poor little girl and her family.

Outstanding police work, especially for that time period. They did not stop until he was found. It's just devastating that the parents weren't alive to see the arrest. Life is truly not fair. Linda was robbed of her life, yet he lived decades as a free man. I can sympathize with the abuse he endured as a child, while still wanting to see him held accountable for his horrific crimes.

I hate the thought of anything bad happening to children. It's extremely disturbing and gut wrenching to think about. My heart goes out to Linda, her family, and all who cared about her.

Also the fact that this monster literally got away with the worst crimes. Justice system cares nothing about children unless they are dead.

What I am mad about is the fact that the perpetrator lived so long and even did not suffer from the cancer. He just died without any punishment. RIP Linda. Very sad that the mum passed on probably carrying the guilt all her life and didn't live long enough to witness the killer.

My sister and I grew up in corona Del Mar. we were classmates with the O’Keefe’s. Linda was a year ahead of my sister and two ahead of me. I remember when she was abducted. It was very scary for all of us. In fact I was telling this story to someone a few days ago. Back then, Corona Del Mar was a little berg of a town on the Pacific Coast highway. We walked and bicycled everywhere. We weren’t thinking anyone would harm us nor did our parents think that either. This situation was a huge smack in the face for our community. This was 50 years ago. A complete different time than what we live in now. Her mother wasn’t being mean or horrible to have her walk home. That was just how it was. I cannot even comprehend how she felt. In fact amongst the kids in town we heard she never really recovered from the loss.
