What you call British was common in the US, at least the Midwest, in the 1950s -1960s, if not also later. Ad - ver" - tiz'-mint. But also retaining the 'z' from advertise..
There was a clear shift at some point in the late 20th century
..
I understand that retaining the third syllable emphasis seems more 'normal' when coming from the root word, but it still sounds awkward to me because it takes a little more linguistic "work' to say tize" than tiz'. It is pronounced more like 'dz' - a shorter [duration] sound.

I consider it similar to the use of 'a' and 'an' where there is less, or simpler muscular movement required to produce the sounds.

P, S, makes me think humorously, If we as 'ment' for the thing used to accomplish the root word activity; this makes cement the stuff used to 'ce'. . .
