From what I've learned, there are 4 ways to solve for the x-intercepts of a quadratic equation, which were factoring which you did here, the quadratic formula, simply graphing and probably the hardest one which is completing the square

A simple question: Where does the curve intercept the X-axis? Where Y = 0. So, set Y to zero and solve. Set X = 0 to solve for Y intercepts.

I went one extra step. I wanted the (max, or min value?) of y. But I wasn't sure how to do it. At first I mistakenly took 3 to be the x-coordinate of y-max/min. But that returned y = (3)^2 - 2(3) - 8| = -5, which is obviously wrong. Then I realized that the true mid-point, or x - value had to be (-2 + 3) and (4 -3), or 1. Which yields y = (1)^2 - 2(1) - 8, or y = -9.
