This is not a seasoning video, nor has anything to do with lye in soap. Grill, Wok, Griddle and all Cast Iron cleans up easy peasy like this, no need for soap. This pan in my vid is 10 years old and delivers AH-Mazing flavor.

If my mom caught me putting steel wool on a cast iron skillet she would bust my head with said skillet

From this comment section I've learned that cast iron cleaning will always be contentious 😂

I have a cast iron skillet that belonged to my g-g-grandma, brought from Missouri to Oregon on a covered wagon. It then went to Idaho, then Washington, then Hawaii and now it resides with me in Colorado. The first time I put it in the sink "to soak", my mom 'bout lost her mind and I got a lesson in how to care for it properly. I really treasure that thing. 💖

Back in the day soap had lye in it. Lye destroys cast iron seasoning. This is how todays "no soap in cast iron" myth got started. It's just a holdover from the past. My cast iron set is 25 years old and in perfect condition. The set is intimately familiar with Dawn and a stainless steel scrubbie.

This cleaning process will work great in my small apartment. I'll just learn to ignore the smoke alarms.

I never have to scrub mine with that. That'll scratch the seasoning on the pan. Wood scraper, get pan hot, hot water, sponge or rag all I have ever needed.

You have to heat up the oil after it's clean til it gets to the smoke point. Otherwise it can go rancid in between cooking

I usually wipe clean then add boiling water and use tongs and a paper towel to clean/scrub. Works perfectly. I would think steel wool would eat into the seasoning. Once cool I season with Crisco.

I was taught to use coarse rock salt and a wet rag to scrub

The cool thing about cast iron is how resilient they are. If you damage the seasoning you can just reseason it and it's good as new.

I have washed my cast iron in soap and water for the past 45 years. They are great.

Le Creuset grill pan is not the same as bare cast iron you would find for example in Wagner, Griswold, BSR pans. And there’s no need to season them unless you have stripped the coating by using the abrasive metal scrubber.I have the same Le Creuset grill pan+press and it is recommended to wash them with soap and water. I would never use a metal scrubber on a enameled and coated cast iron and press that cost over 300$. I actually don’t use the metal scrubber on my Wagner or BSR skillet. Hot water and sea salt works perfectly if you season them correctly to begin with. If this is something that works for you that’s great but I wouldn’t be advising people follow this example. I’ve also had my grill pan for years, use it all the time but mine looks brand new-inside and out.

How is it that people still think dish soap somehow shouldn’t be used on cast iron? It’s a complete myth.

You can totally use soap on cast iron. You're seasoning when you're done regardless.

I use kosher salt to scour my pan.
Always season with avocado oil after use.

I inherited my mom's cast iron skillets. It always makes me laugh when people go through these elaborate systems to care for cast iron. Mom just washed with dish washing liquid and a scrubber. It was and still is beautifully seasoned . ! You don't need to do anything else.
