Seeing Mary put down a step was so satisfying to the viewers. Edith ended up living in a castle with her perfect husband and her daughter. I laughed and was happy for her. Mary had to curtsy to her sister.

I loved this episode the first time I watched it. For years, Edith the quintessential middle child, was so put upon by big sis snooty Mary and the family seemed to dote on baby sis Sybil. Edith getting the grand prize in the end was chef kiss wonderful.

This whole story arc makes me love Lord Grantham even more. He goes from just wanting Edith to be happy, to a bit disappointed that she might settle for a marriage because she has the potential to become “one of the most interesting women of our times” (which is a huge step for him in terms of recognizing both his daughter’s talents and women’s rights), to thrilled that she’s both happy and about to outrank him. He’s definitely conscious of his class and the social expectations that come with it, but he’s also just a great guy.
