Awesome information. The term is angular velocity.

The best explanation of choosing lathe speed was this;
''If you take a stick, and drag it slowly across some tall grass, the grass just bends out of the way.''
''If you take the same stick and move it across the grass really fast, it will cut the grass.''
(jimmy clewes)
So, as fast as you can safely spin it, is best.

So very true Lyle, and so right. We tend to forget the real reasons behind wanting your lathe speed fast, but more important to do it in a safe and secure manor. Thanks for the reminder.

I thought I was turning too fast but I was turning too slowly. This explains so much. Thank you!

Lyle, it seems like its been a while since your last Tuesday tip. I I find that I will turn the speed up to where I have no vibration, and feels safe. It is nice when turners like you, with a lot more experience, mention what speed they are turning at. Anyway, thanks for the new tip.

Lyle, you said you never use chucks. Is this just during the roughing out stage or through the entire process? Thanks.
