I have this mounted atop the stairs for home defence. Just as the founding fathers intended.

Actually there are some grisly accounts from the US Civil War of men and squads/platoons just disappearing into red mist and pieces of cloth when hit by cannister or double cannister. Shit is brutal.

Let's not forget chain shot. While primarily used against a ships rigging, it could also be used against infantry

Here's the thing, before molds were really common, shot of all sizes were made my dropping molten lead from a shot tower into a pool of water. Just imagine a one pound sphere of molten lead falling and hitting you in the head cause it was your shift to clean the tower

Imagine knowing all this as a soldier and you STILL have to walk in a straight line towards your enemy😂

a lot of the time the balls in cannisters were made of iron so they would not deform when they hit the front rank and would pass through them to the second and third rank

It's well documented that during the battle of Trafalgar, when Victory fired it's first Broardside into the stern of Bucentaure, a Royal Marine loaded an entire casket of musket balls into the 64lb carronade on the forecastle, in addition to whatever double load was already in there.

I'm honestly quite amazed that admiral Villeneuve survieved, given he was on the quarterdeck.

Canister shot was strictly a point blank range weappn. They filled it with random bits of scrap metal, there was zero consistency at all. It was like firing a bucket of nails out of a cannon.

Grapeshot was an improvement over canister shot as it had much more range due to firing relatively uniform lead balls instead of random bits of metal.

Fun fact: Canister Shot still exists and is used by tanks and some mobile gun platforms with smoothbore cannons.

I know it was used to great effect by Abrahms tanks as an anti-vehicle method.

Union of Salvation gives a glimpse on what it'd be like to face up against grapeshot. (Result: Really really bloody on the receiving side)

line warfare was still a thing in that time. So imagine not only having to come to terms with the fact you might turn into human cheese, but you'll probably be tasting human cheese as the guy's face beside you explodes and you get to taste a bit of his brain if you're unlucky

We still use canister in the abrams and Stryker MGS except the shot is tungsten. Can be used for clearing a mined, wired obstacle.

Grapeshot, buckshot, birdshot. So many words to describe the same thing
