Judge ORDERS suspension of Twitter in Brazil

A Brazilian Supreme Court justice on Friday ordered the suspension of X in Latin America’s largest country, a dramatic escalation in a months-long dispute with platform owner Elon Musk over the limits of free speech in an era gripped by polarization and disinformation.

The order by Justice Alexandre de Moraes is poised to affect more than 20 million X users in Brazil and deprive the platform of one of its largest and most active markets. The closely watched dispute has made Brazil — X’s fourth-largest market — a key venue in the global debate between free speech and disinformation, and has become central to Musk’s mission of making X a “free speech public square.”
By early Saturday morning in Brazil, many were reporting they could no longer access X.

Brazilian authorities expect the application will be blocked in all of the country by the end of Saturday.

Its also against the Brazilian law for them to operate in Brazil without local representation. And they shut down their brazil office... To be petty... So they can act oppressed when brazil says its literally illegal for them to operate in the country...

I dislike how this os framed as "the judge thought they were spreading misinfo". No, they objectively were.

Elon on Turkiye "If I didn't block the opposing party accounts then it would've been shut down! What was I supposed to do?"

Elon on Brazil "Shut it down what do I care?"

Musk wants the right to yell fire in a crowded theater with no pushback or repercussions... civilized society cannot allow that. It has an interest in the public space (when it comes to elections and official discourse) being truthful.

the order of operations is a bit confusing. ordering Musk to ban accounts came first, when he refused Moraes threatened Twitter representatives with legal action (as per the art 19 of the internet law). THEN musk pulled the representatives out of the country so they could keep the website operating without any way for the company to face legal action. that is when Moraes ordered the site to be banned.

also people can only be fined if they are using VPN to access Twitter (though there is no way to actually enforce it). Moraes tried to ban VPNs outright, but people probably told him how it was a really bad idea and he backed out. however other people in the government, while they agree with banning twitter, they are against the fines, so it may be removed.

also I don't know when this was recorded. but they missed all the Starlink debacle. though Musk folded in the end and blocked Twitter for Starlink users in Brazil.
