Finally, someone who doesn't look down at cartoonists while also being a realism painter.
Don't be like green lizard tone indicate.

I remember wondering my drawings looked so flat when I was young. Shading really made it look 3D

Thank you for clarifying that a stylistic choice is not the same a a newbie mistake. People forget that’s what you’re talking about and get defensive. It’s really annoying when you’re just trying to help people 😅

I was working in a tattoo shop recently and this is definitely something I picked up on during my time there! Generally I’ve seen certain portions dotted in for marks that would look like outlines but are really just shaded portions, definitely something for me to work on! Thank you for posting this! Can’t wait to make the investment into one of your courses soon to help improve my art work as a whole!

To add something to the no line rule. Only use line to differentiate betweem area. Like previous sketch, the line on the jaw wss drawn to make the jaw and the neck separate, and the neck was drawn to shown that there is a neck instead of a flying head. Remember that in sketches, its all black and white, and slight line might cause bigger difference.

In the end, drawing and painting are merged. Tones and lines living together

"The real world doesn't have outlines"
Yes, it does, it's a product of specualar diffusion, surface texture, ambient occlusion, the way our eyes prossess what we see, ect.

Practicing contours or drawing with just the Edge of a pencil (only Big strokes) really helps you learn how to do this and practice

I was dreaming to be a future artist, and this is a really great example of how I can improve my shading, because I have been imagining too much about my future art being good, That my drawings turn out bad, Thanks for the tip!

I think the biggest difficulty with shading for me is still figuring out how light bounces around 3D surfaces

I personally like doing linear drawing focused on stylized shapes and line quality. But I still need a understanding of form and perspective, there's no way around that.

Another nice video on philosophy of living.

Mistake number 1. Not shading.

People tend to divide their lives between struggles and pleasures. "Oh once the exams are finished I will play all day." But in real world there are no outlines. It asks of you to both struggle and pleasure. Do not go overboard with outlines. Mix struggles and pleasures. The Sargent's one side is filled with struggles but there's pleasures too. And the other has boundaries between pleasure and struggle but barely. Allowing him to mix joy and suffering.

Remember. No suffering nor joy lasts forever. This creating a contrast which is soothing to look at.

I never knew I got talent until I realized on these videos I do all this, my grandma taught me well, same concept with tattoos, tattoos look way better when they open up into the skin and they’re not completely cut off like a sticker

Remember realism and cartoon can mix wonderfully at times, just be smart about it
