The auctioneer's "mind's eye" realisation and direct pointing at Sam/the camera implies that the auctioneer became aware that they are a character that will disappear at the end of the joke. The death rattle before "sold" crystallises it. Brilliant 4th wall break.

I've never really watched much of Dimension 20 (heard a lot of great stuff about Brennan there), but this was enough to cement the fact for me that Brennan can absolutely sell a dramatic moment. That shake/quiver in his voice in the second 'Going once' is SO good
