Panasonic Lumix S5 II Review | They Finally Did it

Just like the original S5, the Panasonic S5 Mark II is definitely a hybrid camera with some great photo and video spec. We're looking at 6K 10-bit video, improved lowlight, probably the best image stabilization I've ever seen and of course, that new autofocus system which is a huge deal. But how does it stack up? Let's talk about it.

Nice overview of a very promising camera. As you pointed out, they have pretty much addressed some of the shortcomings of the S5. Features like the 8-way joystick and the discrete cooling fan, full size HDMi, plus that EVF upgrade are worthwhile. I hope the AF will be good for tracking wildlife, then I will really be interested in buying it.

Great review! Thanks! I have a pre-order in for the S5iiX, so I'm researching lenses while I wait for the release. Maybe I missed you mentioning it, but which lenses were you using for the photos and video during this review? I think I saw the 20-60mm kit lens a few times, which is only and extra $300, so I figure I might as well get it. With that in mind, I'm trying to figure out a good second lens that would compliment the 20-60.

Awesome Video! I Can you check if the S5II HDMI-out desqueezes your image straight out of the camera on anamorphic mode without the help of an external monitor’s desqueeze function like the ninja v?

Excellent video. I'm interested in buying this camera for Wildlife Video mainly with some stills in between. Is it possible to set the S5 II, so the constant Auto Focus only works while pressing the Shutter Button? Would the Video Auto Focus be good enough for filming wildlife and lock onto Birds and animals. Is the AF good enough to shoot BIF?

I shoot on L mount with Leica SL2-S and use a S5 as my b camera. Can you confirm that the dual exposure feature and other computational photography features like live composite made it over to the s5ii? It’s not super important but it was a reason the s5 came out for some creative shoots.

Excellent video on the subject! For video autofocus, I think this is a no brainer. But can you help me out with stills autofocus?
I tried an S5 but ended up returning it because the eye autofocus would show a crosshair over the eye, but when I upload the files to the computer, the focus would be on the eyebrows or eyeglasses rims, especially with the 85mm S f/1.8. Does the S5 II fix this issue? Does it actually focus on the eye, or does it focus on eyebrows, eyelashes or eyeglass rims?

Lumix autofocus is still brutal. If you are doing any commercial work I would never recommend a panasonic if you intend to use autofocus. Especially wedding videography. Shame really as the lumix range is great regarding all other features.
