As one of the best-value full-frame hybrid cameras on the market, the Panasonic Lumix S5 has been a hard one to beat - until now.

Panasonic has released the Lumix S5 II - an upgraded mirrorless camera body that’s enhanced for video production with 6K video recording, real-time LUT, a full-size HDMI, 4-channel audio and an XLR adapter. In addition, this system features a drastically improved 4-mode, active image stabilisation that is set to impress.

Taking video production further, Panasonic has also released the S5 IIX - a sibling to the S5 II with a black colour scheme and features additional video output differences including 5.8K Apple ProRes (when recording directly to an SSD), Apple ProRes RAW when using an Atomos, and the camera also supports wired and wireless IP streaming and USB tethering.

In this video, we check out the Panasonic Lumix S5 II to test the improved features and to see whether it’s worth upgrading!

Have you reviewed the Fujifilm XT50 in the same level of detail yet?

Nice informative review. The footage looks great. Does the S5II have a luminance spot meter for checking exposure? Also like other Panasonic cameras, does it have focus transition for focus pulls?

Hi! Do you see any difference in image between S5 vs S5II? Did you detect any difference in your tests both in V LOG and in Natural profile?

S5 II sells for 2300 or 2500 (kit) in Switzerland. Sony a7 IV sells for 2000 or 2200 (kit) cheapest offer in spring sale. But normally they cost around the same price.

So if comparing it to a7 IV and they both cost the same, is S5 II better? Considering ecosystem, other available Sony bodies as an upgrade path. 33mpix. Second hand market.

I still like the ergonomy, display, video options and IBIS of s5 II better. But it's the only phase detect camera which Panasonic has. So there is nothing to upgrade to at the moment..if you don't like it you're stuck with L mount lenses on the only body with phase detect that Panasonic has.

I want to order S5 II with 20-60 mm but I'm not sure it's a rational decision long term due to the Sony and E-mount ecosystem. On the other hand if I get a7 IV I'm worried I'll be regretting it every time when I see the low res screen of a7IV and it's IBIS performance.

some shots it says Shot with S5II and others dont, should i assume all shots other than you talking to the camera is S5II? or any shot that does not say shot with S5II is actualy shot with A7S?

They say it doesn’t do PDAF in 1080 50p. Could you test that?

The higher base iso kicks in at 4, 000 not 2, 500 as you state.

My main concern is the fact it's still 24mp like their mk1. This mk2 is basically a videocentric camera with better af. It's great if you are video focused but I'm more of photography guy. This and the lack of native lenses makes it a non-starter for me. I don't get why they did not up the mp for the mk2 version of this. Weird. Isn't panny aware of sony a7iv? Even sony upped the sensor size by almost 30% to 33mp. ps. isn't it true that panny 4k60 is cropped. huh.

Why a mark 2? Why didn’t Lumix put these features in the original S5? Are they just getting people to upgrade so they can make more profit? All manufacturers seem to be playing this game. It is getting like washing powder, it is always ‘new and improved’!

4k 120 you are going to have to pay 4k$ for jus a body! Not 2k.

I have a lumex camera the battery life is not good. Depending on the the type of battery you yous mine takes 4 Aa battery's I can only usually take 4 wildlife photos before they need to be replaced. It's still a great camera to use. Even at night especially for watching baggers and foxs
