I remember when the starfish die off hit the news. They were blaming that on humans causing the ocean to become more acidic. They were saying that because of human activity the pH of the ocean dropped ever-so-slightly which caused their shells to dissolve. Remember that?

Long term memory that uses highly volatile storage media is not a new thing for us. The earliest computer memory technologies include phosphor persistence on CRT tubes (~0.5 second) and audio delay lines (~0.001 second)
To state that proteins shouldnt be able to store information for any length of time does not consider exactly how that memory is stored.
