In case you don’t know. There is a podcast by Henry Elliot about some of these books. ‘On the road with penguin classics.’ The Pride and Prejudice one is a good one to start with. Very entertaining. Lots of hidden gems.

I love this book (and the companion volume on modern classics)! It is indeed a dangerous book as I found out about so many works of all ages and countries that I wanted to buy.

Thank you for this Emmelie! This looks like a very useful book indeed! It also strikes me as the kind of book you may have to purchase an updated edition every five or ten years in order to keep up with the new books/editions published by Penguin.

The book looks very stylish, and defining it the "reader's companion" seems to be more than correct! I liked the ASMR-y parts of this video, and the reading you did. Overall, it definitely looks like a catalogue of pillars of literature that a reader might want to pick up during their lifetime, not necessarily choosing from the Penguin Classics collection alone.

In my younger years I might have purchased this for my library, but alas now I’m engaged in the Sisyphean struggle to prune back and don’t need such dangerous fruit in the garden.
