i can say from experience with dilligence and discipline one year of study will get you to the point of being able to follow this conversation, and that with 2 years of study you will be able even to enjoy chinese songs and then movies.
beyond that i make no promises other than beauty, adventure, and possibly romance!

What I know is that 1) I can definitely hold really simple conversations in Chinese hsk1, maybe even hsk2 oral
2) I know enough hanzi that if i watch a complex movie conversation i can follow that too! hsk3

3)I can definitely read with a dictionary to hsk4, maybe even hsk5
I speak a lot of languages. Normally by now I would be at least B2 in an indo european language and likelier at least c1.
How long will it take till I finally am able to follow conversations at hsk5 level? Because with all the homophones i am fairly lost. i will definitely know key words and connectors but also will definitely miss lots of words without the hanzi subtitles.
I can certainly enjoy all that great Chinese culture so I am not complaining. My Chinese friend says i should expect about 10 years to full fluency like C1 or even just B2.

if you say "Should it be bought by my mother?", that implies that the mother is the one who should be buying it rather than someone else present. From the previous question it implies that they are wondering who already bought the book. I hope this makes sense.
