In this segment of the “How Fast Is It” video book we cover the speed of light. We start with the slow-moving snail and work up through people, animals, birds, cars, aircraft and spaceships. Along the way we graph speeds on a space-time diagram. Following the history of land speed records, we cover the speed of sound and include its nature as a longitudinal wave and its speed in dry air and the sound barrier. We then cover the Galilean transformations for converting speeds from one reference frame to another. We increase the velocities to the point where we see light traveling at different speeds as far as the Galilean transformations are concerned. We then show how Galileo tried and failed to measure the speed of light; Roemer’s use of Jupiter’s moon Io; and then we show how Antonio Louis Fizeau did measure the speed of light. We’ll also cover Maxwell’s speed of light calculations; We then cover wave interference and the Michelson Interferometer. And using the interferometer, we cover the Michelson-Morley experiment that showed that the speed of light was a constant. We finish with a look at the two main modern ways for measuring the speed of light.

Thank you, very interesting to dive deeper into the early experimentation beside the double slit

Why do we expect a phase difference between light traveling in different directions instead of expecting a red or blue shift? In fact, everybody knows that the movement of a boat on a river cannot be compared to the propagation of a wave in a medium.

The Michelson / Morley experiment proved than the velocity of light is dependent on the velocity of the emitting source. Once this is accepted, the origin of the universe can be explained without a universal speed limit, expanding space, or time dilation.

No. Correct version of this experiment is experiment "Gravity Probe B". This is enough for either theory.

Michelson and Morley took a leisure day on the river one day when they saw a cork bobbing as it passed them by. They thought being the well-educated and brilliant physicists that they are, hmm, I bet we could figure out how fast the water is flowing down the river if we took a micro sonar and installed it in one of the voids in the cork and measured how fast the water sound waves reverberated in different directions on the plane of the vertical face of the cork. They quickly observe the corks changing position with time and determine that it must be moving about 3 km per hour. When tested, the sonar results showed a difference of 0.05 km per hour in the north direction and 0.03 km per hour in the west direction. Since the results did not meet their expectations, they conclude that there is no water in the river. They are declared geniuses by the news media and pop culture. Later, another physicist named Albert Einstein comes up with a theory that proves there was never a need for water because all the effects were caused by space bending instead. He is lauded as a genius of the highest order and awarded a Nobel prize for his paper claiming what was previously known as "water waves" were actually wavicles - a combination of a wave and a particle. Hydrologists around the world decry foul, but their rebukes and rebuttals fall on deaf ears. "Water has been proven not to exist, just stop rehashing your nonsense, " one random super genius shouts as everyone around them dumbly nods their heads in compliance with social expectations.

That was a nice description of a classic experiment whose results did not support the contemporary theory of propagation.
or: "Science!". :)

We came to the conclusion that the negative result of the M-M experiment is due to the coupling of the mass density of light with the density field emanating from the mass of the planet. Coupling that imposes the same speed of light in all directions of the horizontal plane and makes the principle of relativity work, which prohibits the determination of the state of motion of a system, through experiments carried out inside the system. The coupling of light with the density field of the transparent medium, through which the light passes, is proven by Fizeau's experiment, which precisely verifies Fresnel's formula for the composition of velocities. Fresnel's formula for the composition of velocities results from the summation of the photon density with the density of the transparent medium, without any relativistic metaphysics.

Why MM was assuming there was an Aether flow (Aether wind) really escapes me? Aether could be very well also be stationary as an absolute frame of reference. So Aether could not the analogue of a river but more like the still waters in a pond or lake? At the end of the day MM experiments disproved the Aether wind but not Aether itself.

Thanks interesting. Hello. The speed of light is constant - Within the framework of the prevailing gravitational field - This assumption can be experimentally confirmed by physical experience: On the surface of the earth along its gravitational field, we fix the speed of light in the fibers of the optical angular gyroscopes, gyroscopes located symmetrically on a special platform and moving along a circle without angular velocity. You need to look at the picture with three optical gyroscopes. Internet request KZ-33869
