Buckwheat Chop-n-Drop...Now what?!

A few people asked how we cut our buckwheat and here’s a clip of Kip going at it! For these particular rows we used a hand sickle to get the job done. We used this tool because we planted sweet potatoes underneath and didn’t want to harm them, we just wanted to cut the buckwheat enough to allow sunlight to reach the sweet potatoes.

In the video you can see the sweet potato leaves, which are doing well, at about shin level and just before my knees which is how low I’m cutting the buckwheat. We did this to help cover the soil until the sweet potatoes are established and to help build organic matter in the process. This is our first time trying this technique and we’ll see how it works!
