Watch Keanu Reeves and Donnie Yen Battle in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ | Anatomy of a Scene

“John Wick: Chapter 4” takes a variety of martial arts styles, adds a dash of Sergio Leone and Akira Kurosawa and puts them all in a blender.

The film, which has more than a dozen major action set pieces, scales back a bit (but not too much) in this confrontation between John Wick (Keanu Reeves) and the blind assassin Caine (Donnie Yen), an old acquaintance who has been sent to kill John.

Narrating the scene, Chad Stahelski, the director of all four “John Wick” movies, discusses working with his actors.

“Donnie Yen is an amazing martial arts performer,” he said. “But on top of that, he’s also, even after having such a long career, he’s still incredibly fast, almost too fast.”

It was important to Stahelski to make sure Caine was a worthy challenger, but also ensure that it seemed like John Wick had a chance against him.

“That’s why you see John hiding behind things and always trying to get away from Caine.”

The sequence merges some kung fu with gunplay, hand-to-hand combat and swordplay to come up with action that keeps both performers on their toes.

There's a scene where Caine was putting alarms on the walls to alert him when they pass by. The first time he laid one he readjusted it to a lower height considering he was fighting Japanese who are shorter than the ones he fought overseas. It really is a cool attention to detail.

He might not have rolled his sleeves up, but Donnie Yen was a major highlight of Chapter 4, hands down.

Donnie's fighting style in this movie is so clever in that he has adapted to fighting blind and has made adjustments for how a blind person would fight.
The first time he pulls out a gun, because he can't aim, he just magdumps a crowd as surpressive fire to close the gap and fight them, like he doesn't have superpowers, he's just adapted in a believable way.

Growing up on martial arts cinema, 80s action, spaghetti westerns and shooter games as a kid, this was a dream come true. Never in a million years did I think we'd get action like this.

Interesting breakdown. Notice how Donnie Yen’s blind character sticks his finger into the open slide of his pistol to feel if it is empty or just jammed, at about 1.40. Cool detail.

Somehow I didn’t think they could top these early action scenes but every fight was better than the last, the dragon’s breath scene and the staircase scenes were real standouts.

Donnie Yen moves SO FAST. The scene where John on the ground, making no sound, then accidently press on some glass and made a sound AND Donnie starts swinging his sword on John's direction like a terminator. So fast man. 🔥
It reminded me the Resident Evil 6 Nemesis like B.O.W where if you make a sound he will RUSH towards you.

Stahelski's description of Yen reminds me of Bruce Lee filming the Green Hornet show. Lee had to slow down his kicks because he moved too fast for the camera to properly capture them.
