Oh my, it's spring break and for some reason this was my homework for Mrs. Caldwell's class, and I must say, that was the best intro and outro to a video I have ever seen in my life.

Yes, that's my point. :) It is not farmers and farming methods that make food expensive, but everything beyond the farmer between them and the customer. Vertical farming will be more expensive; but a shorter supply chain based on it need not be.

Yes, it is just me doing the writing, presenting, editing, filming -- and doing the computer animation! This is why I do not upload that many videos. :)

In Suwon in South Korea they have built a test (3 story) vertical farm that can already grow lettuces twice has fast as "naturally" in its controlled environment. The economics will stack up, eventally. And especially as Peak Oil gets closer.

I could not read the comments below and i am not sure if i am repeating it. however the jobs which popped in my head are,
1)With the growing population in the world, there is definitely going to be challenge in waste management, though the machines might replace manual picking up of the trash, But humans are needed to think in a ecological way to convert the waste into useful needs.
2) Foods never goes out of fashion, chefs whether they like it or not, they'll have to cook food, May be atleast for few more years.

when 18-wheelers go automated self driving, will there be a new career job as the driver & passenger work together as security protecting the cargo load?

Nonsense. All of these jobs can and will be done by AI and robots.

what about an energy sales person and product tester someone who has someone try out a new item and determines whether it would sell or not. my last future job is a transportation attendant it would require expierenced drivers to help make sure the passenger gets the help they need such as getting out .Buckling seatbelts or even helping with loading and unloading items

I think attention needs to be paid to those who will make our environment cleaner. Those who will filter us fresh water out of the sea, or someone who helps turn solid waste into energy or other valuable resource. We just can not throw things away anymore, everything has a recycled value.

I live in germany near a capital of one of our 16 counties and here 1 m² of land for farming is ~8-10 Euro while 1m² land for buildings is 800 Euro.Thats why i doubt you can build something with several dozen floors they generates the same amount of food youll get out of 1 ha while beeing cheaper. No thats totally impossible from a economic point of view at the moment.Worse: The cost for building stuff is increasing.A house(120 m²) with a small garden starts at ~ 600.000 Euro here :(

You asked for suggestions of other potential jobs. I haven't had time to read all comments, so forgive me if I say things that has been sugggested already. Bur here goes: (1) Data trash collector - someone who clears out unused blogs and meaningless postings and orphaned channels - (2) Data archeologist - someone who recovers and restores old files and drives containing valuable material that cannot be accessed by normal present day technology.

Instead of 1hr photo development, you get your objects developed in 1hr, only to receive an amorphous blob with a sticker on it saying it's blurry or out of focus.

Price paid by the customer? I dont know where you live but here in germany theres a certain... "gap" between what the farmer gets and what the customer pays.Usually the customer pays 600 to 1000 times more then what the retailer payd the farmer.

in many cases it's actually cheaper to pay for a tall building with lots of floors than it is to pay for one huge piece of land.

Teaching could also be handled by robot instructors. Not only could they accomplish more but could know every students strengths and weakness. The class could actually be focused on reaching the desired goal or achievement with this uniform but yet specific teaching style. Pace of teaching would be increased.

No sponsorship here! :) On vertical farming, you need to look at the price paid by the customer, not what the farmer gets. Today a lot of money and resources are spent on storage and transportation, and vertical farms can save on this. The A-Go-Gro vertical farm in Singapore is already selling commercially to the public, as Plantagon International hopes to not that long from now. And China is building many vertical farms.

In my next video I'm also visting an aquaponic farm in London . . .

Colony Engineer could be a real job someday, if jobs as we know it will still exist in the future. The Colony Engineer is incharge of supervising and coordinating the construction of colonies in space, on asteroids, planets or moons in preparation for large scale colonization.
Another likely job would be Ecosystem Engineer, incharge of repairing damaged or collapsed ecosystems and augmenting existing systems. An extension of this job in the more distant future would be a Terraforming Engineer.
