Ptolemy XII Auletes is actually remembered for being a failure. He styled himself as Neos Dionysus, the 'New Dionysus, ' and was a drunk and womanizer. His nickname Auletes, means 'Flute-Player, ' or 'Piper, ' a derogatory term as it was unkingly to be intoxicated, while dancing and fluting around at religious festivals.

He crashed the Egyptian economy. It was marked by strikes and civil unrest, mostly do to his endless bribes to Rome to curry favor with Caesar and Pompey, driving Egypt deep into debt. This combined with the loss of Cyprus, instilled a hatred for him among the Greeks, Jews, and Egyptians (literally everybody) who officially deposed him, handing the throne to his daughter Berenike IV Epiphaena (older sister of Cleopatra).

Ptolemy spent the next 3 years crawling to Rome. (Supposedly his daughter Cleopatra accompanied him.) He murdered an embassy sent by Berenike to make her case and his bribes ensured that Rome just shrugged. He finally skulked off to Ephesus, until Pompey and he bribed a particularly unscrupulous Roman Aulus Gabinius to abandon his own post in Syria and put Ptolemy back on the throne. He initiated a bloody purge, which was restrained by none other than Mark Antony. (This is also where Antony supposedly met Cleopatra.)

The Piper died a few years later to no one's regret, leaving his kingdom in ruins. Then Cleopatra took over and began working her magic.
