Him saying that he didn't know how to interact with her properly makes sense. He lost his dad at a young age. It also makes me think about one of my male friends who lost his dad before he was born. He had a hard time "properly" saying/showing how he felt too. He showed affection in odd somewhat inappropriate ways.
