Season Four - Episode Nine: "Bug"

Episode Description:
Walt (Bryan Cranston) struggles to subvert Hank's (Dean Norris) homegrown investigation, while a deadly warning forces Gus (Giancarlo Esposito) to consider a deal. Meanwhile, Skyler's (Anna Gunn) plans to run a legitimate business are stalled.

Episode Overview:
After retrieving the tracking device they placed on Gus’ car, Walt and Hank are puzzled to find that he apparently drove only between his home and his office. So, as Skyler suggests they devise a plan to get out of the drug trade now that their car wash is close to making a profit, Walt’s concerns lead him to put a GPS tracker on Jesse’s car, too. But when Hank suspects that Gus is using his farm to run his drug empire, Walt warns Mike that trouble may on its way.

In the wake of Walt’s warning, Mike oversees Jesse and a team of workers as they clean the farm of any hints of the drugs that have been hidden inside. However, as Jesse is pressing Mike for information about what Gus has in mind for Walt’s brother-in-law, a sniper opens fire. And as Mike risks his own life to save Jesse, Gus walks directly into the gunman’s sights, confident that the cartel won’t kill him. Meanwhile, Skyler’s plans for turning the car wash into a legitimate business are threatened when her former boss Ted Beneke is investigated for tax evasion. Though reluctant at first, Skyler shows up at the audit to convince the investigator that her ignorance of accounting led to Ted’s problem. But after Skyler says that this is all she can do to help him avoid jail, Ted makes it clear that he still doesn’t have the money to settle the case.

Although he balks at disposing of a worker killed during the sniper attack, Walt thinks twice when Mike warns that he could be next. While meeting to inquire about what Gus has in store for Hank and to plead for Walt’s life, Jesse again fails to use the opportunity to kill Gus with the poisoned cigarette that Walt prepared. And when asked if he’s capable of cooking meth without his partner, Jesse learns that Gus is sending him to Mexico to share their recipe with the cartel. Finally, when Jesse tries to warn him of the plan, Walt angrily accuses him of backing out of their deal to kill Gus. And after the two partners end up in a brutal fistfight, Jesse orders Walt to leave and never come back.

Walter: the hippocampus of the brain actually is the reason why this soup tastes so good
Jesse: I dont know what the hell this is, but clearly you didnt cook just to have a 'chat'
Gus: can somebody please fucking compliment my fish soup i have worked so hard on this recipe

I love how contrasting the meals with Walter and Jesse are with Gus. Walter is extremely careful and almost afraid of what he says, whereas Jesse is straight to the point and fearless.

Jessie really showed his loyalty to Walt here in this scene, it’s fucked up that immediately after this Walter was down his throat.

It’s strange how Jesse unexpectedly becomes so badass and also so loyal in season 4. Amazing character development

I love how he actually knocks Gus off his game for a split second.

There was not a single badly written character in 5 years of this show. And it had a LOT of characters.

Jesse might be a junkie but he gets straight to the point. Impressive

Jessie had more loyalty than Walt ever deserved.

Notice Jesse ALWAYS refers to Walter as Mr White?

You can feel Gus Fring mentally grinding his teeth trying to talk to Jesse...

But there is also a begrudging acknowledgement Fring gives to Jesse's capacity to understand the situation.

It's easy to underestimate a junkie. Fring thought he had him figured. Turns out he was wrong.

Fring is likely frustrated that both Walter and Jesse seem hellbent on making his dinners awkward.

Still love how he totally matches Gus' intensity every single time. Jesse's always doomed to be so much smarter than he thinks he is.

Jesse correctly identifies Gus's plan and immediately proceeds to fall for it

Id say this probably made Gus respect Jesse even more. Jesse proved himself to be a relentlessly loyal henchman to Walter White and clearly had some serious balls if he was willing to speak out against Gus.
This whole conversation probably convinced Gus even more to try and find a way to make Jesse Loyal to him rather than Walt.

Gus was in a win win situation. Jesse exposed Gus and he was shook, but poker faced into Plan B and Jesse managed to save him afterwards

*Gus:* "Jesse, what is 1+1?"

*Jesse:* "So you're saying, you want me to kill Mr White for you? Well guess what, that ain't happening"

I feel like Jesse’s fearlessness truly developed after Jane died. His deathwish makes him unstoppable no matter how smart or strong his opponent is.

I love how Season 4 is Jesse at his bravest and most loyal and Walter at his most cowardly and deceptive. Yeah, even more deceptive than in S5. Nothing beats his evil genius plan of poisoning a child and credibly blaming Gus.
