My watch only plays when my phone is close. But for long distance my watch disconnects from phone and I can’t listen to downloaded music from my watch.
Weird, I asked siri to play music and it worked

If your phone is far away, like 2 hours apart, can you play music on watch or can it play on other phone?

Hope this helps. Ok so I just figured out if your watch doesn’t have cellular or you decided not to pay for it like me, then it won’t work if your phone is over 300 feet away. But if you connect your AirPods to your phone and take it with you then you can control the music from your phone. 😊

All, before you head out with out your phone, you need to download music on Spotify to your Apple Watch. If you try to download a playlist or song on your phone, you will see the option download to Apple Watch. You will need to filter to downloaded in Spotify on you Apple Watch, then you can do the steps outline in this video. Hope this helps!

Mine just says connection failed at the step at 1:10 even though in the settings it says the watch is connected to AirPods via Bluetooth. So annoying
