Growing Ginger On A Kitchen Windowsill

In this video I show how to grow ginger indoors in a pot. Ginger can easily be grown as a houseplant for its attractive leaves and flowers or grown on a kitchen windowsill for use in cooking. This video was filmed over the course of a year to show how much the ginger tuber grows over a year on a sunny kitchen windowsill. My results were ok here in Scotland, but if you live somewhere with warmer and sunnier summers you should be able to get a much bigger harvest of ginger tubers at the end of the summer.

Thanks for watching

Thanks for the video. Get a one inch size ginger - with eyes if possible for a slight head start. Wash them bc it may have chemicals to stunt growth. Put in compost soil & perlite about an inch deep. Give a good soak. Put somewhere warm about 68-86 F or 20-30C. Don't keep soil too wet, just damp.

I tried this last summer with a piece I found sprouting in the kichen cupboard. I live at 56°N in Perth and put it in a SE facing conservatory, where it seemed to do very well with plenty leaf growth. When the leaves died, I looked at the root only to find I had kept it too moist and it had rotted. My main mistake was not having proper drainage in a too shallow pot but it was as you say a fun experiment and well worth doing. Thank you for posting this.

Thank you for your videos!!! I'm so happy you live in Scotland!!! I struggle the most to get good advice for gardening in cold weather, most youtubers live in countries with proper warm seasons...So happy that I suscribed!!

I didn't know you could grow ginger like that, thanks for showing! 😁 I just planted three pieces of ginger into two pots, hopefully at least one of them sprouts. I live in a rather hot climate, so I think I have a decent chance of getting them to grow big.

Hi, thanks for the video. I've tried this a few times. Indoors too cuz I'm in Scotland. Each time I've tried I got the plant to grow ok, but I got horrible soil flies and gave up. Did you ever get this problem?
