Is a $60 Smartphone Worth It?

What kind of phone can you get for $60?

With Android 5.1, 5 megapixel cameras and quad core processors you can get a surprisingly solid smartphone for just over $50. In this Is It Worth It I compare the Alcatel Pixi 3, Blu Advance 5.0 and ZTE Maven to see which has the best screen, design and build, performance and camera and whether a cheap budget phone is worth buying at all.

This is very helpful, especially with my parents wanting to add a low-budget phone to the plan I'm running for a sibling. Fantastic video!

Short answer: No. You're better off putting that $60 towards a used Nexus 5/Moto G from various outlets (Ebay, craigslist etc).

i'd go for the BLU, though about two months ago i bought a SKY 4.0D to replace my busted Nex4 and old GalNex. the dual-SIM is the HUGE advantage, and probably the key selling point for me for any future phone. keep one SIM for personal, one SIM for work - all on one device that fits in one pocket and only gets charged once.

I gave my father my old smartphone. Galaxy note 2
He uses it for emails (which I taught him how it works)
He now has a small business of insurance running with his savings.
There's whatsapp running and he has to click pictures of the insurance claim sites.

There's more productivity work he does with the phone than I ever did.
He has news website setup as widget, he Skypes, and had the battery replaced from Samsung service center.
He hands it over to me if there's something he doesn't understand.

That's what you use the device for actual work.

Instead of duck face selfies and Starbucks cups, his phone camera scans documents and the pictures taken are printed for legal documents.

Instead of whining over Facebook over how bad the suicide squad was.... He uses it to communicate with clients

It's worth it. The Blu that I got for the same price is unlocked with dual sim capabilities. It's perfect for small use and even international use.

I've been looking to get something from Blu for a while. They all do really well, and are almost all below $200. I always love maximizing my bang for my buck.

Thanks for this. I'm in the UK, where phones can be a little more expensive, but it's still nice to see someone taking people on a tight budget seriously. Saying, "You can get a better phone for $150" is precisely zero use if you don't have $150 to spend. I had a ZTE Blade Q Mini two years ago for about £50, and because I'm not a gamer etc it worked fine. The fact that it wasn't a Moto G was irrelevant, because I couldn't afford a Moto G. So thanks again. :)

3:53 it's not the frame rate that makes the image look so bad in the darkness, but rather the poor maximum ISO paired with a very low shutter speed to try to compensate for the low lighting. Just thought I'd point that out for future phone/camera reviews! Keep up the good work! :)

This really helped choosing a phone for my mom. Thanks!

Nice comparison. I run quite some low end phones (THL, DooGee, HomTom, Huawei, Oukitel), catering some teenagers, and I do agree on usability and quality in the low end market.
They are all perfectly usable, and the value for money in the sub-$100 category increases fast over the last two years.
But I think you could get better phones for that money. Like a DooGee X5 (or X5 max for a huge battery) that brings 720p screen, 8 Gb storage and a bigger battery.
And - as you might expect - the best way to spend your money is to define your demands, and then find a phone to answer them. Like a HomTom HT3 for less then $50 (720p, good battery, beautifull silver body) and an Oukitel K4000 ($90 - but a really rugged phone with 720p, 2GB, 5GHz WiFi and a huge battery).
