The Chinese city of Chengdu is known by many Chinese millennials as the country’s unofficial “gay capital”, even sometimes dubbed “Gaydu”. Although probably more famous for pandas, Chengdu also has a reputation for its inclusive and laid-back culture. While such prevailing attitudes may have paved the way for a relatively more visible LGBTQ presence, the community must also contend with censorship from Beijing.

0:36 is such a vibe. The translation "none of their business, none of your business" is too polite. What she's actually saying is: "It's none of my f**king business (and) it's none of your f**king business". You are too polite SCMP!

Chinese culture has depicted homosexuality in a neutral manner for thousands of years, showing tolerance without assigning a positive or negative value.

I already know what people are going to say. This may be new to a lot of you, but homosexuality has been a thing in China for thousands of years. There was nothing wrong with a man having a male lover so long as he was an accomplished man.

It's like when your parents say "you can't have ice cream until you finish all your broccoli and do your homework."

You can't have a boyfriend until you finish all your studying and graduate from your local Magistrate. An accomplished man, someone who has achieved great things in his life, was allowed to do whatever he wanted. China even has a recorded history of bisexual emperors

Back in those days, Homosexuality was really only taboo for women

During ancient period many parts of the world tolerated homosexual relationships until they came in contact with christianity, that includes China as well.

Most Chinese people have neither love nor hate towards homosexuality, we simply mind our own business

Shouldn’t “minding your own business” be the norm!

Chengdu has been a historical metropolitan center and a strategic gateway to the west when Shanghai was a tiny fishing town and Shenzhen didn’t exist. It’s a big city with many subculture, don’t compare to San Francisco or West LA size small community.

Chengdu being China’s 🌈 capital is just another human label. While the city’s open-mindedness and acceptance might be comforting to many, but in the grand scheme, these labels and struggles are temporary and meaningless in the face of a universe that ultimately doesn’t care.
