I once played in a regular game night, and we'd play Monopoly maybe three or four times a year. I put together a decent streak of maybe seven or eight wins in a row -- pretty good for a four player game where your odds of winning should be 25%. Part of it was luck, part of it was being pretty good at Monopoly, but what really made the win streak possible was shutting the hell up about it. In a negotiation game, having the rep as "the guy to beat" is deadly.

Some years ago my brother was a shift commander for a precinct in a large city PD. He arrived on the scene of a guy holding a woman with a blade at her throat. One of the officers said they had called for a SWAT team and a hostage negotiator. My brother said they wouldn't be necessary, drew his weapon and shot the guy between the eyes. He got an all expenses paid vacation for his whole family at a resort for a week while the department "investigated" whether it was a good shoot. 😂

Depends on how strong your position is. In history hard ass military negotiators saved thousands of lives by being hard bargainers. From a position of overwhelming power, bargaining becomes nothing more than a gesture of reciprocity and leniency for repercussions, usually combined with reparations, fealty or tributes/taxes.
