How times have changed. Something that I learned in high school shop class in 1962 is now an ancient and mysterious skill. I was looking for replacement wheels/cutters for my Desmond dressing tool that I've had for well over a half century and I stumbled across this video. These dressing tools are also what you need to clean up a grinding wheel after someone has "plugged" up the stone pores by trying to grind aluminum.

If you get one of these take it apart and add lock-tite to the threads, my flew apart on the second use.

I like those better, it seems like the diamond or carborundum dressers turn any wheel you use them on into a fine grit wheel that takes forever to grind anything. That dresser style you have seems to fracture them off so you get the original size.

You can also use an old broken wheel, stone to stone,

One of my bench grinders is a JCPenny 6 inch. It is a gear driven type that's very loud. My neighbors wake up when I use it, so I don't use it after 9:00 pm. I've had a dressing wheel in my tool box for years. Like you said, wear a face shield. Thanks Jason

There are vids on Ytube that demonstrate how to use these devices without damaging your body.
But of course, us manly men do not require instructions or manuals. I never have and I have the disasters to prove it. :):)
