Repair and Install of my Fifth Wheel Landing Legs

Показать описание

One of my fifth wheels landing jacks decided to not retract the other day. It would also not hold any weight.

Turns out it had a stripped, worn out worm gear collar nut.

In this video I show you how to completely disassemble the landing leg and install a new one into the Keystone Cougar Fifth Wheel trailer Model 276RLSWE. I'm sure many others are similiar.

The beveled gears in my leg were OK but there is a little trick to get them apart. A small pin needs to be punched out to remove the mechanisms. I show you where that pin is.

Hi Ray. I learned that the following leg is binding and blowing the fuse. Lead leg is working fine. Part ordered. Your algorithm is awesome! Thanks, thanks, thanks 👍

I just wanted to take the time to thank you for this video. I just bought my Keystone Cougar 5th wheel from a private party and before we even had a chance to use it the landing gear on the passenger side would not move up or down. This caused the motor to stop. I checked the fuse box and everything was good, then I saw the video about the in line fuse!! That was a life saver! I was going to take it in to Camping World but it was a 4 week wait. Then I saw this video. II gave me everything I needed to do the job myself. Turned out to be a gear missing a tooth. Easy fix and now it is back together running great. Thanks you again for the help.

I replaced the landing legs on my 2011 keystone cougar, this video is absolutely right on the mark! Repair quote was over one thousand dollars!! Purchased kit from etrailer for under $150 and changed them myself in about twenty minutes!! Thankyou !!

Glad this was still posted; my driver's side 2010 Montana leg went kaput also; went about 3 inches up, but wouldn't catch after that. Once on the truck, the retracted leg could be pulled down about 3-4 inches and then "catch" (presumably on the worm gear). Seems to be a common problem. We bought this just shy of 1 year ago and this is the first major failure. I bought insurance on it because we complete newbies to RVing. The shop can't get me in for another week to submit the claim. Like any insurance policy, it's all about presentation and insurance codes. Hopefully everything will be covered without hassle. You do an awesome job in explaining and showing all the detail. I think with this video and a buddy's help, we could've done this, but that's what I have the insurance for...so, we'll see. Thanks again!

Thank you for making a video and disassemble the leg jack. The same problem is what I have with my 5th wheel leg jack. Collar nut is strip, now I know next time if I have that problem in the future. Ordered 2 each new ones from e-trailer

For high tension  screws, grease is better, always. Great job. I was puzzled by the system ( I don't have jacks on my rig) but obviously you've fiddled with it a few times! That was a very entertaining video. Thanks again and have fun at Rio Grande!

I saw another video this evening about greasing the worm gear. They took a length of clear tubing that 'just' fits over the worm gear, and fashioned a zirk fitting on one end with a plug and hose clamp. Slide the tubing over the worm gear and pump the grease to it!

Great work! I own a 2011 KZ Durango. Bought it 18 months ago. I have no idea if my landing legs & gears have ever been lubed. They are very slow, and now I think I know why. I will be inspecting them this season.

Nice job, Ray. Good explanation of the entire system. Don't know if a zerk would work here as it is not an enclosed space, but a couple of 3/8"-1/2" (10-12 mm for those so inclined lol) holes with rubber dust plugs should be enough to stick the end of a grease gun in.

The shaft that comes out of the top with the two holes in it.  The end hole broke off, the one that holds the square tube going to the other side.  I have to replace the shaft.  All the rest of the worm gear and motor look.  OK.  Thanks for showing how to punch out the plug to get the shaft out.  Hope I can get just the shaft without having to get the whole leg assembly.

Another excellent repair video. I don't have landing legs on my camper, but always like to see the insides of mechanical things.   I think I would keep the extra leg as a spare in case you have the same problem with the worm gear nut.  I wonder if that leg wasn't greased correctly when it was manufactured?  I see you added extra grease to the top gears on the new legs.  Could you look inside the housing and see if the worm gear was greased well?  I think a zerk fitting would be an excellent addition.  Good that you are so handy with the mechanical issues, that would have been a costly repair at a RV repair shop I bet.

Another great video! Very helpful! I just wish I had as much room in the front of our 5th wheel. We have generator and propane tank storage up front - makes for tight work. Thanks again!
