This cartoon that you used explains a little on how civilians died who were near the trench lines but were not evacuated as the mustard gas was invented.
Many civilians literally died while sleeping while the soldiers at the front survived only to find dozens citizens of those villages eradicated, in only one night, from existence.

My wife had a wolf kennel for years, I grew up running hounds for bear and cougar. Last year we acquired a real "round head" Boston bulldog puppie. The breed is not dead, there are a few breeders keeping the line. "Ester"s Lilly" is her name...after her grandmother. She is without a doubt the smartest dog we have ever had. Stubby would be proud of this little girl.
