This is the story of Milunka Savić that inspired our song Lady of the Dark. Milunka Savić was a Serbian woman who took her brother’s place in the army. Partly disguised as a man, she would eventually be among the most decorated soldiers of WW1!

We're fans, you should be too!

======== Lady of the Dark LYRICS ==========

Who shall be remembered, In the ancient House of war?
All the medals, all those stories, In the Alley of the greats
Celebrated hero, who has wandered through the dark
She stand before you, all that metal shining bright

Lost in time, returning to the light
Bow before, this lady fights for life
So sister

Raise your hand, For the lady of the dark
Soldier with no will to kill, with a philanthropic heart
Forever break the norm, She’s the girl in uniform
Fighting side by side with men, she will fight until the end

Lied to be respected, and to change her brother’s fate
Took a bullet, earned her freedom, and a place among the stars
Served the Iron squadron, served the toughest of them all
No fear of dying, for the frontline she was born

Sacrifice, she took her brother’s place
War to war, a place where she belongs
So brother

Don’t fear the reaper, don’t fear the war
She spared the life of brothers

She’ll fight for honour
She’ll fight for life
A lady goes to war

As a Serb, you have no idea how happy this makes me. It'd be pointless for me to try to explain it so I'll just say thank you, to both Sabaton and Yarnhub. Thank you from all of Serbia.

Once my captain in the army said: "Greek soldiers have a really big advantage compared to others. You don't need to worry for what will happen if we lose at war. You will be dead already if this happens". Serbians took that quote to whole new level, fighting even when they lost their country. And everyone has to remember that this lady did all these in a period of time that women were way below than men in society. Rest in peace Milunka Savic, and I wish the best to come for my Serbian brothers 🇬🇷☦️🇷🇸

"Destroying the enemy's observation post, destroying the machine gun nest, I did it somehow easily. What helped me the most was that I had an innate sense of throwing the bomb where I intended and very far, because I was very strong. Everyone was amazed at that. And I actually didn't even learn how to throw a bomb.."

I love it more when it’s stories that are lesser known and then we have an amazing tale sang by Sabaton and beautifully told by Yarnhub

I love how her last name is phonetically pronounced almost like “Savage”, which is an accurate representation of her personality when fighting in war.

Flora Sandes was a British woman who served as a member of the Royal Serbian Army in World War I. She was the only British woman officially to serve as a soldier in that war. Initially a St. John Ambulance volunteer, she travelled to the Kingdom of Serbia, where she was welcomed and formally enrolled in the Serbian army. She was subsequently promoted to the rank of Sergeant major, and, after the war, to Captain. She was decorated with seven medals

My great grandfathers brother fought in WW1. He was in the Thessaloniki front, he was 17 and he died there. I have his letters. When I was at Zejtilnik i managed to find his grave there. The amount of gratitude and sadness I felt when I was looking at his gravestone made me rethink a lot of my life choices. Thank you for this Sabaton. Thank you for recognizing what Serbia did and how much we sacrificed in that war.
