Akira holds the gold standard. Way too many animes copy the whole psychokinesis power holding individual who breaks out the lab or hospital. This one just has the impact.

this whole movie is a trip, the power Tetsuo has is insane, and one of my favorite aspects is the progression. in the beginning he struggles to slide a glass across a table with his powers, but by the end, he's literally flying through space, and going god mode on there asses, before basically self emploding because he didn't continue the treatments and medications offered by the neo Tokyo military

Because of the grotesque animation of Tetsuo's deformation and other disturbing elements from the film, this genuinely sparked fear in me when I first saw it (I was also 8 or 9). But now understanding the characters, story and everything else behind it all, I count it as one of my top favorite films ever.

To this day Akira is still the gold standard in terms of hand drawn animation to me. Every scene in it is so fluid. I know they went way over budget on this film but god damn if it doesn't show. I just wish a studio would have the balls to try this kind of thing in the modern age.
